Dateline: Feb 10 2025
Dear friends,
There are 2 really bad bills being heard in House committees Tuesday, Feb. 11 and Thursday Feb. 13. They are House File 9 and House File 8. If you are free at 1 pm you can help pack the room for these meetings. Please wear your DFLEC pin if you do. You can also send a letter to one or more committee members expressing your concerns. Some DFLEC members will be testifying at these meetings. All voices and a presence in the meetings are greatly appreciated and important. Read on for more information on the bills.
Where/when: Tuesday, Feb 11th at 1:00 pm House Energy, Finance and Policy Committee, Location: Capitol 123. Chair: Rep. Chris Swedzinski
Key reasons to oppose HF 9: (see this DFLEC letter)
lifts the moratorium on new nuclear power
grants a 3-year delay in meeting 2040 clean electricity goals
prohibits demolishing fossil fuel generating plants
support carbon capture and sequestration
Emails to committee members helpful, especially if a committee member is your representative.
Where/When HF 8 - permitting reform bill is to be heard in the House Environment and Natural Resources Finance and Policy Committee on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 1 pm, Capitol Room G3. Remote testimony will NOT be allowed.
Key issues with the bill: (The companion bill to this in the Senate has 3 DFL sponsors, Hauschild, Frentz, and Kupec.) This is a big and complex bill that would change the way permitting happens in a manner that would constitute a dangerous relaxation of our environmental controls.
Testimony plan -for HF9: Individuals wishing to testify or submit written testimony or handouts for the hearing must e-mail the committee administrator by 1 p.m.on Wednesday, Feb. 12. Handouts must be in PDF format with OCR capability. In-person testimony may be limited due to committee time constraints. Contact: amy.zipko@house.mn.gov
Again, emails to Committee members are helpful, especially if you cannot testify in person.
